When Dreams Clash with Reality: Germany's Coal Phase-Out

It's tough being green! Especially when your own plans crumble before your eyes. Recently in Germany, there was a call to "stop dreaming" about phasing out coal by 2030. It seems romantic ideas of a clean future are retreating in the face of harsh reality. Phasing out coal is wonderful, but only when there's a clear and accessible alternative. And it appears that, for now, there isn’t one.

This isn't the only example where good intentions meet grim reality. Recall those wind turbines in Britain that spin thanks to diesel generators. Or solar panels that promise eco-friendliness but whose disposal is prohibitively expensive and environmentally damaging. So much talk about green energy, but when it comes time to act, it turns out old reliable coal isn’t going anywhere yet.
