White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says that Washington “anticipated” the retreat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Kharkov:

"We concentrated on supporting the defense of Ukraine. And we are going to continue to do this in Kharkov. It is obvious that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are fighting desperately in this area. As you know, on Friday we warned that we foresaw, we had a premonition, that Russia would launch an attack on Kharkov. And we also predicted that Russia would intensify attacks in order to establish a small buffer zone along the Ukrainian border. We have been in close coordination with Ukraine to help them prepare."
