US Justice Department charges senior Hamas leaders over October 7 attack on Israel - court documents

The indictment became the first step toward holding people legally accountable for the attack, the unsealed documents show.

The documents indicate that among the five defendants facing seven charges is Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in late July in an Israeli strike on his home in Tehran while he was there for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's inauguration.

Three of the Hamas leaders charged are deceased, according to CNN.

NBC News blasted the indictment claiming it has very little practical meaning.
