Hurricane Milton could be worst storm in century to strike Tampa area — NWS

The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay warned that Hurricane Milton could be even more devastating than Hurricane Helene, with winds of up to 175mph and “life-threatening” 15-foot storm surges now forecast.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor has warned residents they are “going to die if they don’t evacuate. “If Milton stays on its designated path, it will be catastrophic for our area,” she said, adding that storm surges are expected to be twice as large as Helene’s.

Six million people fall under hurricane warning zones, with a state of emergency already in place for 51 of Florida’s 67 counties.
