Spain's top officials found themselves uninvited guests in a ruined town in the Valencia region. Locals greeted them with a hail of stones and mud, as well as insults: "Get out!", "Murderers!" and "Sanchez is a son of a bitch."
Police had to bring in mounted officers to hold back the protesters. At least 214 people have died in the floods, but the death toll could rise.
The authorities were unable to respond to the critical situation in a timely manner, which caused a storm of indignation.
